Life without hair: A woman shares her hair loss experience

When Jane McConnell hit puberty she began losing her hair. Now 33, and with the help of Transitions Hair, Jane has come to terms with her genetic lot.

“I had such thick hair as a child. Pulling it back into a bun, I found it was always too heavy, which is such a strange feeling to reflect on.’

Jane’s hair loss began when puberty hit, it started thinning at the gage of 14 and it has been slowly getting thinner ever since. By the time Jane had reached her late 20’s, she was unable to wear it out and in the past year, even when it’s tied up, a lot of Jane’s scalp is visible.

Jane has been diagnosed with female pattern hair loss. It can be caused by illness or changing hormone levels and usually happens to women as the ageing process sets in. However in Jane’s case, her hair loss was caused by a genetic condition that started very young. Simply put, the hair falls out, and it doesn’t get replaced by new, healthy hair. In fact Jane’s hair is very weak and fragile.

Female hair loss is often topic of taboo. It’s something that happens frequently and no one talks about, or like Jane found – people assume it must be a serious medical condition. “Sometimes I tell people I have alopecia – they don’t seem o understand that I’m simply going bald, just like a man might.’

At 15, Jane went on the pill to help slow her hair loss which seemed to slightly help. She has also been to see countless dermatologists as well as tried an array other techniques such as acupuncture, natural therapy and hair loss lotions in failed attempts to regain her hair. When she was 21, Jane had hair extensions glued onto her existing hair, however claims this was the worst thing she could have done as the weight of the hair scarred the follicles leaving her with traction alopecia resulting in more hair loss than before.

“Sometimes you don’t feel like looking at yourself in the mirror at all. It’s like looking at an unfamiliar old woman. It doesn’t make you feel very sexy when you unclip your wig at night and place it on your bedside table.’

However Jane made the right choice by choosing a beautiful topette crown extension which clips directly onto the top of her scalp. Made from real human hair it can be styled anyway you want – “It is the best thing I have ever invested it’ claims Jane who now finds it easier to face the world as well as the possibility of future hair loss.
