Is a Robot the Answer to Curing Hair Loss?

Whether you’re male or female, young or old, these days it would seem that some form of hair loss is inevitable. However don’t lose hope just yet – a new technology has emerged in the hair loss realm and has attracted huge attention for its promising surgical hair replacement results.

Thirty-four year old Peter Falconer who started losing his hair eight years ago was among the first Australian patients to try a new robotic technology for treating hair loss. The ARTAS robot uses digital mapping to harvest thousands of hair follicles from the back of the patient’s head where there is still healthy hair, which is then transplanted into the area that is affected by hair loss.

To perform this surgical hair replacement procedure, the patient is positioned head down in order to gain access to the back of the scalp. Hair loss is most commonly seen on the top of the scalp, with the healthy areas in the back of the scalp. The back of the scalp is where the healthy and viable hair follicles are usually located so this area of the scalp is known as the donor site in a hair transplant procedure.

About two-thirds of all men will experience hair loss by the time they are 35, and by the time they turn 50, 85 percent of men and 50 percent of all women will have experienced noticeable hair loss.

Unlike traditional hair transplant procedures involving donor hair strips or manual extraction of hair follicles, “the advantage of the robot is speed, accuracy and lack of fatigue, because the robot will run all day without getting physically tired, whereas doctors who perform this surgery frequently get very tired doing the technique,” Dr Knudsen said.

The robotic treatment will set you back around $12,000 – but 10 weeks after surgery, Peter Falconer could not be happier with the outstanding result, explaining that you can now comb through his hair without anybody being aware of where the hair was taken from.

“I suppose some men look at getting a hair transplant done as not very manly, but I’m ecstatic about mine so I’m happy’

Hair loss is on the rise and particularly because we’re all living longer, we have a higher chance of experiencing hair loss, but given the constant advances in hair loss technology, living with hair loss or suffering in silence can be a thing of the past!
