How to Deal with Hair Loss

dealing hair loss

Many people are terrified by the thought of hair loss. Baldness is an experience most would rather do without, especially if you start experiencing hair loss or thinning hair early in life. The amount of time and money some people spend on hair restoration or in search of a hair loss treatment is testament to how much hair loss affects people.

Male pattern baldness is very common with about 50% of all males will experience some kind of hair thinning during their lifetime. While some are quite untroubled by it, others dread the radical transformation that can occur to one’s appearance.

Female hair loss is often a taboo subject however it is more common than people realise. In Australia, it is estimated that there are 700,000 women who have extreme hair loss and another 2.2 million who have moderate hair loss. Overall, about 50% of the adult female population will experience some form of hair thinning in their lifetime. This loss of hair can be even more devastating than for their male counterparts. Hair is viewed as something that defines a woman, her femininity, even womanhood.

Whether male or female, most people grieve the loss of their hair. Unfortunately, this process of grieving is largely misunderstood, underestimated and isn’t given due sympathy or empathy from those who have never felt its effects. Simply put, they don’t understand.

The Process of Dealing with Hair Loss

Hair loss in both men and women can often be embarrassing and the of cause low self-esteem, which in turn can affect a person’s social life, social interactions, work life, etc. Between men and women the coping mechanisms to deal with hair loss vary, however there are often some common stages people go through when dealing with hair loss.

1. First Moment of Realisation

That ‘moment’ of realisation that your hair is thinning can occur in a variety of ways however many people see their ‘bald spot’ for the first time when looking at a photo of themselves or something like that. Sometimes your hairdresser may mention that you don’t have as much hair as you used to. Or maybe your child comments on your thinning hair. Hair loss often comes as a rude shock. Most people don’t realise they are experiencing hair loss until they have already lost 30% of their hair.

2. Panic, Fear & Denial

After this first moment of realisation people often begin to panic, particularly women who fear there may be something wrong with them. Or perhaps you think it’s all in your head – is my hair really thinning or am I being crazy? Many women will try and hide their hair loss due to this fear and embarrassment.

3. Acceptance & Motivation

You begin to accept that there appears to be a problem and you should look into it further. You begin to research the causes of hair loss, your hair loss symptoms, what can be done to prevent hair loss, etc. You may then get to the stage where you are motivated to pro-actively seek out a solution for your hair loss – which is what we’re here for!
