Women's Hair Loss Information

Hair defines many things for a woman -personality, attractiveness, success, health and social status, just to name a few. Losing it can have a dramatic effect on both self esteem and social life. Many women feel that when they have hair loss, they've lost a large part of who they are. The good news is that Transitions Hair has the hair regrowth and hair restoration technology you need to help you get your hair back, and so much more.

Why Me??
It's true what they say, life isn't fair. We have enough battles to fight as it is, but for some of us, why is hair loss one more? There are many reasons why women lose hair. Hormonal imbalances, stress, chemotherapy, and disorders such as trichotillomania are just a few. Female hair loss can also be induced by certain prescription drugs or result from the use of harsh chemical relaxers; extremely tight hair braiding and inappropriate use of hair extensions can cause permanent damage to the hair follicle.

The most common type of hair loss among women is female pattern thinning hair, or Androgenetic Alopecia. This constitutes over 85% of all hair loss and is hormonally related. For this we can blame the body's production of Dihydrotestoterone (DHT). The DHT builds up around the hair follicle and eventually kills it - like salt water to a tree (fig 1).

Androgenetic Alopecia is typically hereditary, so it's quite likely that other people in your family have experienced it, or are likely to. We call this 'Generational Hair Loss'.

Fortunately, most women do not experience baldness. Rather, diffuse thinning hair across the front and top of the scalp, whilst retaining a front hairline.

At Transitions we have treatments that can help you with hair regrowth and hair restoration. We use the same proven techologies that clinical studies show help with hair regrowth and stopping hair loss. If, however, you have more extensive hair loss, we have numerous hair restoration techniques to give you the hair you desire.

Menopause and Female Hair Loss
Many women experience hair loss later in life as a result of menopause.

The onset of menopause causes a decrease in the production of oestrogen. Without oestrogen to produce testosterone-blocking enzymes, testosterone can be freely converted to DHT on the scalp. The result is a shorter hair growth cycle, finer hair, and hair loss. This is a time in all women's lives that many things are changing. But if we have anything to do with it, they'll be changing for the better. So instead of taking the hand life has dealt us, let's discard a few things and get something more. At Transitions, we believe life isn't about waiting for the right circumstances, but rather creating our own.

We have helped thousands of women experience the benefits of having great hair again through our hair restoration and hair replacement techniques. Don't wait any longer, call us today.

Pregnancy or a hysterectomy can also trigger hair loss and thinning hair. At these times the male hormone tends to have more of an effect because there's less oestrogen in a woman's body. Hence, causing those hairs that are affected by genetic hair loss to regress.

After pregnancy, genetic hair loss can be triggered, although, it is more common for a woman to experience temporary diffuse hair loss (thinning hair all over the scalp) three to six months after delivering a child. After such a time her hair will normally grow back.

Crash dieting, or after acute illnesses, such as an acute infection or extreme stress can also cause hair loss and thinning hair. In most cases, except after menopause, hair regrowth will resume after you return to normal diet or health. Some medications may also cause hair loss, again, hair regrowth will often ensue after completing the course of medication.

Alopecia Areata
'Alopecia' means hair loss. Alopecia Areata is a clinical condition typified by sudden round bald spots appearing on the scalp. The patch usually begins very small, about the size of your fingernail. Usually, hair regrowth occurs quickly in that area and should be no cause for concern. Sometimes, one or several patches of baldness can occur. The patches may enlarge or even merge together. In extreme cases, all the hair from the scalp and face can be lost (alopecia totalis) or hair from all over the body can be lost (alopecia universalis). But such occurrences as these are very unlikely.

The best solution for this kind of hair loss is Sensi-graft.

The Cause of Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is generally understood to be an autoimmune problem i.e. When the body's immune system, begins attacking some of the cells in the skin or hair causing baldness. People who experience alopecia areata usually have a genetic predisposition for the problem. Usually it is triggered by an aberrant immune response. This could be anything from a viral or bacterial infection, a vaccination, stress, and trauma to the skin or even exposure to a foreign substance not usually encountered.

Trichotillomania
Is a known obsessive-compulsive disorder, which involves the pulling out of one's own hair. This condition is usually seen in pre-teen and teenage girls and is often unconscious to the individual.
The condition can affect women of all ages. To properly diagnose this condition a biopsy can be performed by a competent dermatologist through microscopic analysis of the ends of the short hairs; the ends of the new hairs are pointed whereas broken hairs have uneven ends.
Hair follicles are remarkably resilient and it would take years of pulling for permanent damage to occur, although if repeated pulling continues permanent loss of hair may result. Trichotillomania can appear as alopecia areata and is in fact, often misdiagnosed as such. New medications and treatments are available for the condition.
